people routinely died of tooth abscesses before antibiotics where available. Is this true?

Yes this is true with any kind of infection that people got before there was antibiotics. If the infection gets bad enough from an abscess it will travel through your blood stream. This is why it is very important for people to have an abscess tooth taken care of with either root canal treatment or having the tooth removed.

Years ago people died from stubbed toes! If you read history from the 18th and 19th century you see how people died from all kinds of strange things. Thomas Jefferson's father got caught in a rainstorm on his horse, caught a chill, got pneumonia and died. President WH Harrison caught a cold giving his inaugural address on a cold Winter day. He struggle for about a month and then died.

Life expectancy in the 1700s was something like 35 years. But there were many old people in their 70s and even 80s. What lowered life expectancy was child mortality. 1/3 to 1/2 of children died before age 12 of childhood diseases. Once you reached 30 you had an excellent chance of seeing 70.

It's amazing to think how many of our lives have been saved by antibiotics.

During WWII, antibiotics were so expensive and rare than patients who got them had to stay in the hospital. Their urine was collected so the unused drug could be extracted and reused! (Ewwww! 8^P )

Yes. In fact, before World War II, people routinely died from everyday things like strep throat, too! Penicillin was discovered in 1928 and was first widely used during WWII, which saved millions of lives from soldiers who had infected wounds. After WWII, it then began to become widely used among all people. Thank God for Alexander Flemming for accidentally discovering Penicillin.
