The military does what it does because of traditions that are handed down from time in memorium. And though the ceremonies may seem to be boring to you the people who observe and/or participate in them have a reason to be there. A Change of Command effect your life in who has control over your life a promotion ceremony allows you to acknowledge your peers or your own advancement.
As to a funeral if you are ordered to to a funeral you are on a detail that renders honors to a person who spent their life and maybe gave their life in the service of their country if a service member goes to a funeral on their own it is because they know the person and choose to go. So as you can see some people want to be there and though you may not choose to go or participate in them most people in the services are there because it is their duty.
By the way what are courtgalities I looked in three dictionary and couldn't find the word...Did you make it up?

well I would guess that you are not a member of that brotherhood then are you.
I can tell you that my heart swelled and I spent the better part of the day holding back tears when they did all the pomp and ceremony for my sons passing out parade with the USAF, so I suppose unless it means something to you being a part of it, or that someone you love is part of it, the whole thing could be seen by one that does not have much as it being not that much fun.
I also rather liked a few of the other Navy ones, for a change the wives could actually be a part of their mens lives for the day.
regards

Tradition and ceremony to show respect for history and traditions; is the reason. As for most of the military personnel not wanting to be there-I was enlisted and no "dog and pony" shows were not our favorite thing t do but, they are important in maintaining he traditions of the service and if you are the one being awarded or promoted then it is very worth while. As for funerals-having been in more then one for friends and comrades-I have never gone to a funeral except to show respect and honor the fallen if I didn't like someone I don't go; I would think that some one who would go to a funeral to be happy because they didn't like them would have a large number of people at his funeral attending for the same reason he attended others.

Because the ceremony is for the military member not the civilian and to most of them it's not lame and cheesy Unless you're military or close to them you can't understand or appreciate the importance of what's going on. Not to mention with any ceremony there are guidelines that must be followed.

You are obviously too narrow minded to understand things like Respect, Duty, Honor, Courage, Commitment, and Professionalism.
My retirement ceremony was far from Cheesy! It was a special time in my life the lives of my friends, fellow shipmates and my entire family who found it to be an incredible event and were proud to have been involved it it.

I find their traditions out of my norm and therefore very interesting. Same goes for the different cultural celebrations and ceremonies. The first traditional Japanese restaurant opening I went to was so unexpected and cool I will never forget it. Enjoy life man....

It only seems that way to you because you have no love for this country. Stay away from the ceremonies and they won't bug you any more. Those of us who understand tradition will continue to participate.

If you have a problem with Military ceremony, don't participate. But if I were you, I'd be careful which Soldier heard you make this remark.
