I am in a class with a bunch of guys and they all compete to see how much they can lift. I am just trying to tone and not build much muscle. They all make fun of me (jokingly, but it still hurts) because i only lift at the most 10lbs with the weights and just the bar with the bench press. I was wondering if anyone could help me think of a way to make them stop without making a big scene.

Generally, "toning" is accomplished by decreasing body fat and increasing lean muscle mass. Don't be scared by the term "lean muscle mass"...it's a good thing and what you want. In order to achieve this, you will eventually have to increase the weights you are using. If you have been doing the same routine for even as short a time as 6 weeks, it is time to give your muscles something more challenging to adapt to in the form of increased resistance.
People who "bulk up" often do so through weight training AND a serious increase in caloric intake (either that or they are geneticallly gifted!). Unless you are eating to gain weight, then you shouldn't. However, DON'T make a drastic cut in calories to get toned...crash diets and very low calorie eating patterns are a sure way to mess with your hormones and the way your normal body functions. Continue w/ what you are eating, and possibly make little changes in what you eat and when (healthy food choices in moderate amounts 4-6 times throughout the day)
The reason I answer this way is perhaps with this information, you will see the benefit of increasing your weights (probably a few less reps if necessary), which in turn might let them see that you are attempting to push yourself and then maybe they'll smarten up a bit.
It's great that you're in a class which promotes this type of exercise. Keep up the good work and don't be afraid to use your instructor as a good source of information w/ questions like these. Good luck

Just keep doing what your doing. I would suggest working harder than them. No time for breaks. That way at the end you can be like MAKE FUN OF ME NOW B*****! (not seriously though). But just like the first guy said they are guys. Thats what we do. We rip on eachother. Don't let them get to you. Just show them that you can work hard and are determined to build muscle.

Not much chance of them stopping. Boys will be boys, but don't let them get to you. Lift what you are comfortable with and ignore them and whatever you do, don't show them it upsets you. Just do your thing and good luck

Are you trying to get toned by doing low weight hip reps?? That doesnt work.....The only way to get tone is to lower your body fat %. If it is already low but your not toned its because you dont have much muscle.....You cant directly tone a muscle....
