Actually a pump has a pretty wide range of possible answers ..the earliest idea that i know of was by Archimedes ..was it a pump ? sorta it was a screw...it was a long straight pole hollowed out and inside was a series of slats when place in a groove looked like a screw thread on a bolt...the edges were sealed with goatskin to make a good fit on the inside and by turning the screw handle you could lift water up a slope of about 45 deg...or less...Of course on many older ships was the piston pump that used a flap of wood and skin on the plunger as a check valve when you ran the piston in water got on the top of the piston through the hole then when you lifted it the water was drained into another location...I really could not say who invented the pump..but I'm sure it was by trial and error and experimentation on an older theme that got us to the types we use today....

It goes back thousands of years and the credit goes to the Chinese. They used differant versions to water their fields.

I'd have to give the credit to Archimedes for his screw pump.
