Twenty plus years ago celebrities started wearing jeans with tux jackets; things have gone downhill since.
But when you think if it, most women think they should be allowed to wear anything they want, and that no dress codes should apply to them (and Heaven forbid anyone DARE to criticize them). So why wouldn't it follow that men begin to think the same way, and wear "whatever is comfortable". I do NOT agree, but I am offering one possible answer to your question.

Only if the bride and groom are wearing them too.

It sounds like you're talking about a dressy wedding - but that someone showed up in jeans and a baseball hat and was out of place.

It's rude and attention-getting - and that person sounds pretty immature. When you go to a wedding you show your respect for the occasion by dressing properly.

I guess people just aren't as hung up about it as the used to be. But, on the contrary, some functions (weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs) are more dressy than they used to be. For example, how often did 13 year olds used to have to buy a new dress for every bar/bat mitzvah they went to, wear three inch heals, carry handbags, and get their make up proffesionally done? And no, this isn't just the bat mitzvah girl. These are the guests. But I agree with you, it's very different than it seems to have been a while ago.

As far as I know... That sort of attire has always been unacceptable at traditional weddings!

I can see it as being acceptable only at some sort of "Theme" wedding. And even then... The outfit should be new. Not something you normally wear to mow the lawn in.

It has never been acceptable to wear jeans and a baseball cap to a wedding...the ballet...the opera...or even a fine dining establishment.

It has never been acceptable to me.

I guess times change, and for those who are unsure, ask the bride and groom to be what their thoughts are on proper dress. They are getting married, and their advice should be followed.

Anyone who shows up dressed like this is disrespecting the ceremony, tradition and the families unless they have been instructed otherwise.

I can top that one, I had a distant cousin wear blue denim bib overalls to my wedding. Talk about embarrassing having her sit on my family side of the shurch!

Since NEVER!!! .... unless the wedding is one of those "hippie weddings"...you know, with the flowers in the hair and the "all natural" look stuff...real late 60s-early 70s stuff.

I consider the tight disco denims craze of the overdue 70s early 80s particularly cemented it. We had been all intrigued whilst Brooke Shields mentioned not anything got here among her and her Calvins.

It's not unless it's a hoedown. But it does show you how people have lost the sense of appropriateness and respect by doing such a thing.
