Along with being used as an antihypertensive, tenormin is also used (and once its primary use) to reduce the oxygen demand on the heart for either long term non-emergency treatment of chronic angina and in doing so to reduce the heart rate to more manageable levels. This with beta-blockers is a good prophylactic as a cardioprotective after an AMI.
