If you go to photo shows and contests you see there are certain kinds of subjects that judges always like. Little kids is one, say three or four or five years old. They're hard to 'pose' but if you take hundreds and hundreds of pics you get a few good ones (get them to laugh!) Animals, especially little ones like puppies or kittens. Old barns or farmhouses in a landscape with trees and maybe an old fence. The sun setting over the ocean (I've seen a million of those! Maybe it's just because I live on the west coast. 8^) ).
You know what you do best. If not, look at the pictures you've taken already and see what you are most proud of.

don't waste your time. contests are for suckers; do you have to pay an entry fee? if so, don't bother. they should be paying you! do you take pictures to win a contest, or because you cannot NOT make pictures. there are pictures everywhere; if you have to ask, maybe this isn't right for you.

Photograph what you like unless the contest has a theme you're supposed to follow. If it doesn't then use your imagination.

Who is holding the competition? What kinds of trends do you see in past winners?
