However I am concerned about many of the things I hear about the town. It's old scool goodol' boy attitude and it being mostly retirees and I have heard this from more than one different resource. I have also heard it is pretty expensive to live there and that you cannot find a nice home in a nice area for under 300,000 dollars ( we have children so this is important to us.) can anyone give some advice or information on this area. thanks!

I saw your question about a day ago and have been thinking about what to say. My son and grandchildren live in Oregon and I have visited a lot. I have driven into Grant's Pass a few times for gas and twice stayed at a motel there. So I am not really an expert on Grants Pass per se.

In general, why it wouldn't appeal to me is that it doesn't feel like either a city or a small town. It's kinda caught half way and loses the advantages of either.

My grandchildren live in a small town, Banks, Oregon which is about 25 miles west of down town Portland. From here to the ocean is about 65 miles. Population is 2500 and I have biked all around the town with my grandchildren. Being from a small town upbringing myself, I really like this place. I heard the schools are good and close to neighborhood where my son lives. Houses in this neighborhood are 240-310K or so and range from 1600-2500 sq ft. These house were built about 5 years ago.

Portland is fairly close and Hillsboro and Beaverton a little closer. If you like the small town atmosphere you should check out Banks.

Good luck with whatever you decide...

I live in Payson, Azrizona and that's about 12000 and not too bad..Plenty more sun then Oregon...lol

I would agree with what you said about the attitude of the town... many small towns in Oregon are like that, despite Oregon's "hippy" reputation, which mostly comes from the bigger cities like Portland, Eugene, or Salem. Grant's Pass does kinda have a lot of old people too haha, but the home prices depend on what you call "nice". You could get a decent sized 2 or 3 bedroom, slightly older house for around or under $300,00 I think. Check out real estate websites to see for sure. I don't know the attitude of students there, but I know that the high school is SO nice!! (the building) It's brand new. Politically, I think most people there are pretty moderate.
