I have a source for inexpensive computer expuipment that I would like to begin selling on Ebay. However I have to pay sales tax from the provider, unless I have a Merchant ID.

Anyone know how I can get a Merchant ID?

Try your State Comptroller's Office. If this is not the state office for sales tax in your state, they will be able to direct you, but that is the office in Texas.

Are you registered to collect CA sales tax? If not, you will need to be since all sales in CA are subject to CA sales tax.

Go to CA's website and download a copy of the CA Resale Certificate. Whenever you purchase products from your supplier, you need to send them a properly completed Resale Certificate. There may be an option for you to issue a "blanket" certificate which notifies your supplier that you are claiming a sales tax exemption for all purchases.

If your supplier is not accepting the Resale Certificate, then you can file for a refund directly from CA or you can take a credit on your CA sales/use tax returns.

You will need to get a business license first and a seller's permit (although that may be the same thing as a Merchant ID).

I work for a company where people do the same thing. At our company all you have to do is request to be put on a "tax hold" and the credit dept sets it up for you, OR, you can request to have the form mailed to you and fill it out and send it back yourself. Im not sure but it may be the same with your company, just ask and see. Good luck!!
