The battery inside is a 9.6 V ni-cd pack 700MA

The charger i used to use for my transmiter was a 12v dc adapter
Can i use a 12 v car batery charger 5 amp

Will this give me to much power or will the handset just take what it needs ?

Yes, if a 12V adapter power supply was used before, then a 5A 15V battery charger will work.

The handset will only 'take' what it needs. 12V @ 5A is only a maximum current, not a 'forced' current.

(note: I am assuming that the 12V adapter was rated for less than 5A).

As long as the input voltage is the same (12V in this case), the charger should only take as much current as it needs (it is the voltage that "pushes" the current).

Out placed of charger (adapter )might desire to be set for dc to value battery yet in placed might desire to be ac ,ac voltage after rectification supply dc in out placed and dc voltage is used for charging 9.6v batteries.
