Of course, that's how it works.
You can select your service, that's why it is required for males to do so at 18.
If you do get drafted, you can sometimes pick your MOS (career) and you could potentially pick one that doesn't deploy or try to get put in certain sections that don't deploy.

At the present time there is not a draft, however males 18 years old still have to register with the selective service. When there was a draft, if you were drafted you went. Unless you left the country. It is the duty of all Americans to defend their country. If they would take 60 year old broads. I would sign up today. I love my country and will do anything it needs me to do. I wish our country had a mandatory service like they do in Israel. Young people spend 3 years in the Israeli army. It teaches discipline and respect. Something our youth no longer have. Remember, America will remain the land of the free only as long as it is the home of the brave.

Yes, Most of the time they take people (mostly men, im not trying to be sexist) that are right around age 18-28 first. Although anyone can be drafted, its highly unlikely a 54 year old man would be the first to go...

Yes. That's what a 'draft' is. It's forced conscription into the armed forces.

There is no draft or one at all likely in the foreseeable future. You would go to jail if you didn't go in Vietnam. Many went to Canada and were pardoned by Jimma Carter.

Jump the border to Canada. Canada will be glad to take you on as a refugee. (or political asylee)

And anyone who wants a mandatory service requirement can go join the military themselves first. And they should be the first to be drafted.

Not usually. Most men are brave enough to show up when they're called, but yes, a coward who ran would eventually be forced to go.
