Stuff to keep them busy so they don't miss home. Movies, video games, magazines, model cars, board games, puzzles, etc.
I know I prob shouldn't say this but when my husband was deployed, his father sent him some hard alcohol in a listerine bottle. No one was any the wiser about it either.
Also books, yes they will read if bored enough.
This one guy had a couple coloring books and he would color some pages whenever he could and send it home to his kids who had the same books.
Personally, it helps if you both have computers and webcams. You can then use instant messengers to communicate. Windows Live Messenger has video conversations in which you can see and hear eachother. Skype is another one in which you can video msg and also pay to have a phone number and call home without getting charged an arm and leg.
Good luck!

ALL soldiers and sailors overseas love to get homemade cookies of any variety! The favorite would have to be chocolate chip, followed by snicker-doodles. Even store-bought cookies can be welcome when you're stationed in places where they are not readily available.

Is it a small duty station? Large? If it is large, they just might have an exchange where they are able to buy some U. S. made products. Small duty stations rely on what they can be sent because otherwise they survive off of the local economy.

You can also find out what music they like. I've seen many pictures of service-men & women with earphones in use off duty listening to something, whether it be an ipod or tape player or CD I don't know. Send lately released DVD's or music CD's. Recordings you make yourself of local radio stations can be a good choice.

As far as sundries, you can send shaving cream, combs, disposable razors, aftershaves, toothbrushes and paste.

Find out from the Army what is considered contraband. They are more than willing to provide a list of stuff you cannot send, as well as recommendations for stuff that the soldiers may need.

Here are some suggestions. You can visit anysoldier.com for more suggestions.

Deoderant, soap, razors, hand sanitizer, wipes, shampoo, any hygiene item that they normally use at home. Supplies go quickly.

In terms of entertainment, books, magazines, cards, small electronic games, sudoku books, balls (footballs, soccer balls) are great.

For food, you can send almost anything except pork. I'd stay away from chocolate as well because it'll melt in the heat. Here are some suggestions, candy, chips, coffee, flavored packets that you can add to water, beef jerkey.

Kitty is right on...but you may also want to send some powdered drink mix (like propel, crystal light, etc) in the individual packets. You can get them at Wal-Mart pretty cheaply. Tuna/Chicken salad lunch kits are big too, for those who go on a lot of missions.

You may also want to search the "Any Soldier" site and see what people in those places are asking for.

EDIT: Ooops...looks like Miss Tina got there before I did! Sorry for a redundant post!

Besides the other decent answers on here you can maybe pick up some board games, the little hand held electronic games. Favorite food snacks are the best though because supplies are usually limited over there.

The things I liked best when in Kuwait were peanut M&Ms and beef jerky. Books and DVDs are also good, you will know what his tastes are. I also loved the homemade cookies my mother sent me.

PS Send enough for your husband to share. I always shared the cookies with my friends.
