Start from the outside of the door and gently push your cat through it. Do this a couple of times and he/she will get the hang of it.

First you put a stick under the flap to put the flap up. This is the way it would be trained. Go on the other side of the door and put a treat on the side of opposite your cat is in. The cat would jump to it so then she used the cat door to get through. Do this a couple times and then take out the stick so the cat can go through with the flap. Do the treat thing again and do this about 3-4 times.

Don't push the cat through! First, start by taping the flap up so it is completely open. Encourage the cat to explore the door and let him go through on his own. Once he's going through easily, untape the flap, but stick a folded washcloth near the top so that there is a little gap. Again, encourage the cat to explore and go through when he's ready. You'll probably have to replace the washcloth each time, as it will fall out. Once that is working, remove the washcloth. If the cat hesitates at the door, use your hand to push the flap open just a little bit - let him push it the rest of the way.
