I don't know why it stopped but I, too, have found ancestors who married on Christmas Day, so it did used to happen, devout_4_ever.

No, I like to celebrate special occasions so no way I'm going to overlap Christmas and my wedding anniversary when each is so deserving of its own special day and celebration. Also, if you plan on guests, it's quite inconsiderate. I've been to a New Year's Eve wedding, but never heard of a Christmas wedding. I live in Canada so travel gets difficult that time of year, winter is not very popular for weddings. It's completely possible to marry on Christmas day, you might just have more difficulty finding a venue and vendors and convincing guests to choose you over their own plans. Keeping in mind also, not everyone celebrates Christmas, so if you were of a non-Christian faith you would have better luck with a December 25 wedding.

People do get married in Britain on Xmas day there is no law against it at all.
Most people probably chose not to as its quite a hectic and busy time of the year anyway.
But you are allowed to marry in Britain on Xmas Day.
Whoever tells you otherwise is lying or got their facts very wrong.

Hi Doc, How are the Bananas. Didn't know you could get married on Christmas day. I know that Hairdressers are the only people who can't work on Christmas day by law. This is Employment law I'm talking about, So it may be they can't get their hair done to go to the wedding.

As others have said, I think it probably just fizzled out because guests wouldn't want to come. And I bet everything would be very expensive!
Sunday weddings are definitely allowed - it's my 3 week anniversary this Sunday
