Definition of scientist: A person who seeks to discover the nature of an event, object, or entity by logical reasoning, studying, experimenting and providing proofs for his conclusions.

Definition of theologian: A person whose premise is the belief in the existence of a supernatural entity whose nature cannot be grasped by the senses or logical reasoning. The theologian may not even admit to himself the possibility that his premise, on which all his study is based, may be false.

For" Fatima "
Can you give me just one example of a "great thing for humanity" done by a theologian? Would Saint Augustine have done anything to improve our lives? Or was he concentrating all the power of his mind on gaining Paradise in the Afterlife?

If people had become theologists from the time of the caves, would we ever had wanted to move out of them? If theologists should be our models for living, shouldn't we simply devote ourselves to discussing God and all his mysterious aspects so that we gain eternal life? That is exactly what theology produces.

Without the desire to know reality, we are not different than animals. The way dogs lived 5000 years ago is the same way as they live today. That's because no dog can study and learn about reality.
Theology teaches us that the Afterlife is what counts. So, what's the use of learning anything about this one?

For "Matthew T"

Your answer implies that anything that scientists discovered or invented was done for the specific INTENTION of destroying the human race.

It takes theologians to think that way! Their minds are set on the Afterlife, anyway.

The first human who discovered how to tame fire was the first scientist. He did not think that fire was worth taming because one day it would serve to burn people who disagreed with the authorities and thus purify their souls. The first scientists did not conceive of a place in the Afterlife where the souls of people would suffer untold pain for eternity. That kind of mind belongs to the theologians not the lovers of truth, the scientists.

Scientists. By far.

Without scientists where we would be?
In caves trying to kill hogs.
Living with the common cold that could kill someone who has a weak immune system.
Everything around is science.
Period.

Scientists, of course.

Matthew T: Some scientists have made it possible to kill every human being on the face of the earth. Some theologians have merely attempted to kill all the ones who didn't convert.

JRB: The scientist does not 'attempt to prove there is no God'... that's not proper science any more than 'creation science' is proper science, for the exact same reasons.

Dr.Evol, it appears by your definations, that you already have the answer, you just want some validation. My answer is that each has their agenda and purpose to be carried out. The scientist is to make this a better world (if possible) by scientific means. Also to disprove the existance of God by the same means. On the other hand, the theologian tries to reason from the Bible that only by God can society of mankind be at peace with each other and to acknowledge their dependance on him.

Definitely the scientists, yep I'll go with the scientist. Modern medicine has saved many many more lives than preachers. Then there are all the wonderful inventions like the car,the computer, the steam engine, airplanes(what would we do without Bernoulli?) submarines, moving pictures. It would sure be boring without them.

No, this is going to no longer be between scientists and theologians. As you pronounced, technology is with reference to the study of count. "God" isn't count. some describe it as power, yet even then it does not fairly describe or clarify "God" in a satisfying way. yet then, scientists do no longer in all threat bypass into the controversy like this, apart from Dawkins. And all he has achieved is instruct that technology can no longer instruct or disprove considered one of these element as "gods". So he makes money off of his books approximately concept in god at the same time as attempting to tie in his scientific examine to it. honest sufficient, a terrific variety of persons have written books approximately God(s) and tried to tie in scientific examine. he would besides hop on that bandwagon too. Philosophy touches on the Why and how of the instructions "Do solid to others". Why? because you elect human beings to do solid to you. yet Philosophy can purely supply us factors of why we've self assurance and why we lean on particular morals at the same time as others we toss aside. faith, somewhat is, in a type all to itself.

That is very well put, well done. The last bit says it all-"The theologian may not even admit to himself the possibility that his premise, on which all his study is based, may be false"

I have never met one yet who will ever admit they could be wrong.

if injured or diagnosed with disease, most people will first request a doctor who uses treatment methods and medications created by science. after consulting a doctor some will seek religion. ive never met a theist, although im sure some exist, that will seek prayer only.
