It's just not a natural talent of mine. Is playing an instrument like guitar something that is better done by people who have 'knacks' for it?

I dunno it just seems like musicians play so effortlessly like it was no problem for them. For me it's more of a struggle! I feel a little discouraged...

I would say give it a good year with a lot of practice and keep your callouses. If you're not keeping them you're not practicing enough to give it a true shot. At first it's really hard because of all the physical things you have to do that aren't "normal."
Do some practice to improve skills (chords, scales, picking patterns, etc.) but also do some practice just for fun. Play some progressions or songs just for yourself.
If at the end of a well practiced year you still feel like you "suck," then decide. It's work, but it's also supposed to be fun, and if you aren't having any, well do something else. Also, don't compare yourself to faster learners or professionals. Go at your own pace; it's not a race.
Consider lessons if you can afford them and if you do, choose a teacher who thinks about music the way you want to learn it. Learning musical notation or even tab isn't necessarily the best thing for everyone when they already feel overwhelmed. Your teacher should be a cheerleader and a coach more than a taskmaster.

Most beginning guitar players have second doubts and feelings of inadequacy at playing the instrument. Those that play skillfully, seemingly without effort, have gone through what you are experiencing now, but they stuck with it and practiced, focused on music theory and music composition.

Yes, some people can learn quicker than others and it could be considered their knack at doing so. But perseverance and determination to play must be ever within to play.

My main problem in the early years of playing guitar was conquering the rhythm patterns. Every guitarist must overcome a hurdle or two to become proficient and to do that, the guitarist must preservere--don't give up if they truly love guitar music and want to be part of it.

First of all you should have said how long that you've been playing.....kids your age what everything yesterday...and that's not how it goes. All these musicians that you admire have practiced for years...you just aren't aware of this, if you were to write them and ask them how long they've been playing I bet you'd be shocked.....I bet you didn't have a teacher did you.... I find that most kids that teach themselves get off on the wrong foot....they start out want to play a song that's way about their level of playing....they haven't prepared the mucesls in their fingers and hands and can't figure out what's wrong, everyone wants to start out with Zepplin or Greenday, and that's not the way your learn guitar. Why don't you just start from the beginning the right way, then I'm sure that you'll find out that I'm right...if you were taught to read in the fourth grade instead of first you'd be confused correct....well that's what most people your age do with learning the guitar, you want to start in the middle, it's not fast enough to start from the beginning. Your lucky.....today they have lots of sites that teach you how to play on line, or with DVD's, Cd's, or books. If you can't afford a teacher why not try one of the sites on line and start from the beginning, give it another chance, maybe it's not you....it's the way you started !!!!!!!!!!

These are some sites that you can check out, see if there's anything here that would help. If you get bored just learn a few chords while your learning the tecnical stuff and try to play songs with them, that way you won't get too bored !!!

Play for hours every day. That's what it takes. No one is born and can just play an instrument. Sure some will learn it slower or faster than others, but neither one will learn anything without tons and tons and tons of practice.

thank you for an opportunity for 2 points. One doesn't need to be a scholar to know if you know how to do something, doing the opposite on demand will cause you to fail every time. If I want to get out of something, I do the exact opposite. Something I learned a long time ago as a teenager...

This skill requires strengthening of muscles you are not used to using. It also requires a building up of calluses on the fingertips. This can only be done by practicing. Put your mind to it and eventually, you will build up the muscle memory and things that were impossible today will be easy in a few months.

Some people are naturally talented, but they still have to practice. Even if you never get very good, it's still fun and you can play for your own pleasure.
