You do NOT need a passport to travel to and from Canada by LAND until Jan. 2008 at the earliest. You DO need a passport to travel to and from Canada by AIR. See website below to read the WHTI, the passport law, for yourself for your own peace of mind.

If you are a US or Canadian Citizen traveling by land or sea you do not need a passport until sometime next year. The date on that keeps changing via postponements. You can get in with a drivers license and birth certificate.
If you are flying you need a passport now.
There is no difference between the documents you need to enter or exit.

Ive been to Canada nearly 6 times, and always by car. Usually at the border...they ask why you are going in the country, are you going back to the US, ask for birth certificates of everyone in the car, ask for IDs for everyone over the age of 10. Tey ask you if you have any fruits/veggies and any type of weapon like knife, gun, pepper spray, etc.
If you dont have anything like that..then your on your way.
If you have anything, you pull to the side...wait in a building while they search your car and luggage and then they destroy the item(s), give youa receipt of what they found and what they did with it...then send you on your way.

You don't need a passport to enter Canada... but where will you be returning to? The USA? If so, then yes, you'll need a passport to re-enter the country.
