No... the actor on "Sliders" was John Rhys-Davies, who is probably most famous for his role as "Salah" in the first Indiana Jones movie. (Although, yes - he kinda did look a bit like Pavarotti).

There actually was an episode of "Sliders" in which they "slid" to a world where Rembrandt's (the black guy played by Clevant Derricks) "doppleganger" was as popular as Elvis. On the original world, Rembrandt was just an aspiring musician who couldn't "make it" into the big time. People were taking pictures of Rembrandt side by side with Professor Arturo (John Rhys-Davies) and later commented in the news "The King was seen today talking with Pavarotti. Perhaps a duet is in the works."
