I recently saw a mother breastfeeding her son - who seriously had to be about 5. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for breastfeeding, but at what age would it start to become inappropriate or even illegal?

Your milk just doesn't stop just cause your child turns 4 or 5 or whatever age. You can have milk when the child is 5 but the child needs to eat like anyother 5 year old also. I breastfeed all my kids till they were around 3 years old, nothing at all wrong with that.
Different religions also breastfeed for longer or shorter times.
Breastfeeding at 5 years old is not wrong. There is nothing illegal with it at all. There is also NO reason to call CPS!
You have to do what is right for you and only you, you can't go and say that cause a mom is breastfeeding a child that you think is to old that they are wrong. I'm not saying you are.
I do think that there comes a time when age does need to be thought of when you are breastfeeding but I don't know what that age is.....I.myself think that if I was to see a mom breastfeeding a 5 year old I wouldn't think anything bad. I really don't know. JMI

I doubt that it is illegal - but I do have to wonder. I saw a woman breast-feeding what looked like a4-year-old boy on the Montreal subway system. I would think family services would have a good look at someone who did this sort of thing, but they would have a hard time arguing it was a violation or abuse. (The woman I saw was black, some sort of immigrant, I assumed. they do things differently where she was from).

I think about the age where children will remember breastfeeding later in life is maybe too old for it.

Women will usually continue to produce milk as long as it's being consumed...

I don't think its ever illegal, but it could be a cause for CPS to get involved if it seems to be harming the child (the child is not eating table food, is being ridiculed at school or something). In a lot of cultures breastfeeding is more acceptable and practiced longer. Personally I breastfed one of my children till age 2 and there was nothing wrong with it. I think much past that goes too much against the American "norm" so I would not support someone breastfeeding that long. Not to mention at that age there aren't any health advantages to advocate it.

i accept as true with almost all people that suggested confident 10 is a lot too previous--i became into shocked as quickly as by ability of a woman who suggested she nonetheless breast fed a 5 3 hundred and sixty 5 days previous, yet this? yikes! Dont be attentive to whether this is against the regulation, that would matter on the locale-- i think of the mummy has some fetish to have her breasts produce milk, and as long as she is nursing she would be in a position to maintain producing milk...while does it end, while the youngster reaches adulthood? so very frightening.

In come third world countries and cultures outside the USA it is not uncommon to find children being breastfed until they turn 5 years old. I think the child should be breastfed until 2 and then stop. I will breastfeed all my children until they are 2. Anyway just because it is common in the USA for moms not to breastfeed at all or stop at 6 months doesn't mean it's capable for moms to quit breastfeeding at 2 years in third world countries. A lot of times breastmilk might be the only food a child gets all day. So if you were to ban in it all countries especially third world countries then you would be helping muder lots of innocent children.

I saw a similar situation, only she also had a 2 yo that didn't. As I observed (hopefully discreetly) I could see that the older boy was retarded. It is understandable that she wanted to give him a sense of security in a strange place, but she could have been a little more discreet herself.

I didn't breastfeed anymore after my son turned 1 and I think breastfeeding until they are 5 is a bit much. I can understand wanting the best for your kids but after about 2 years old if you want them to have your breast milk then you really should pump it and put it in a glass.

Some ethnic groups, aborigins, tribes, commuinities have their own traditions, and wisdom. Parenting styles should be respected as long as they are not really truly harming their children. That applies to breastfeeding preferences, and I'd say that until 5 yrs would be okay. Medicine has confirmed that breast is best. Shouldn't it be then illegal for mothers to refuse to breastfeed their own babies?

No...there is an where it becomes abusive or detrimental and then children's services would get involved - but not at five years old. Could have just been a large baby too.
