Some of my ancestors on my maternal grandfather's side, of the Polzl surname, came from Germany; the others originated in England, but fled the country for Holland in the 1500s due to religious persecution. They came to New York in the 1600s, and my many-times great-grandfather worked closely with Peter Stuyvesant.

Ancestors from my maternal grandmother's line are a mish-mosh of heritages. Some originated in Germany, others came from Bohemia, and a few were from Austria-Hungary and the Czech Republic.

My father's maternal grandparents were originally from Poland, and migrated to Pennsylvania in the early 1900s to work in the coal mines. Some of the family continues to this date as miners. My paternal grandfather, on the other hand, was from a small town called Gavignano, outside of Rome, and came to the United States around 1906 via Ellis Island.
