You must have responded to the nag screen tha appears when you first turn on a new Mac. It asks you if you want to pay for a DotMac account or get a free trial (actually should be 60 days). If you agreed to a free trial and the time has passed, you'll need to pay 99.95 U.S. dollars if you really think you need DotMac. It's not required, however. You can use your ISP email account or Web based email.

If you want to use your ISP email account, the server settings can go right into the Apple Mail application. It should be a POP account so follow the Mail Help guide for setting up a new POP account. Your ISP will provide the info that goes in the preferences for the account such as the incoming server, outgoing server, username, password, use/not use SSL, etc. You can even use GMail by following some exact detailed POP setup from the GMail site.
