What is the relation?

Don't feel obligated to give a gift to someone you don't know well.

Give a card.

I've never heard of an engagement gift given by an acquaintance and I was in the wedding business for ten years. Is this something new? Cultural?

I would say for an engagement gift maybe a bottle of wine, a bath and body basket or something. If it is a bridal shower, then a more lavish useful item gift would be a little more appropriate.

You didn't indicate why you felt you were obligated to give a gift especially if you don't know that well. Are you invited to an engagement party? I would agree a card is sufficient to express your excitement for them and well wishes.

have they sent out their wedding invitations yet? If you have a wedding invitation, or an engagement announcement, you can put it in a simple silver picture frame and have it engraved with their names and the date of either the engagement or the wedding, depending on what you use. A distant family member did this for us and it is one of my most cherished gifts.

locate out in the event that they have a catalogue of things which you would be able to make a call from. call between the mummy's to be certain. in the event that they haven't any checklist then purchase a silver image physique (you will spend perhaps 150USD) they are going to definitely use for a marriage image.

since most people invite, or announce to "casual acqaintances", to their arties, dinners, etc, and are more or less "fishing for gifts", if it is someone i dont know that well, just a really nice congratulatory card is appropriate, but if you know them, i would go with a card, and maybe a gift card to a nice restaurant that they can use any time, hey, we all gotta eat, right?

good luck with your decision!

Unique art gift is the best present.
There is a web site –photoartomation.com ( http://www.photoartomation.com ), they convert a digital photos into paintings of different art styles and print them on canvas.
My friend sent them a picture and they turned it into beautiful piece of art. I saw it and it really looks good.
