The significance of the use of dye depends on the disease that is suspected, the part of the body being examined, and the scan being used. In general, the use of the dye is quite significant and even essential to detect the structures being sought.

It's a little odd if they didn't explain that to you at the lab.

Anyway, the contrast dye is needed to create a contrast to make a higher definition image. I have never had an MRI or a CT scan without the dye. I had an MRI only a few months ago, and they only offered 2 different types of contrast. The more expensive is really worth it in my opinion as there was no nausea at all. There are supposed to be no side effects from the contrast dye itself. Of course there is always a risk of allergic reaction. Maybe ask them a lot of questions next time, I always do, whether they like it or not.
