I can listen to a cd on my computer. When I try to listen to something on-line, u tube for example, there is no sound. How can I fix this?

if u open your sound panel u will find a number of inputs.
Line
wav
midi
mic
each one has a separate control.
then there is a master control.
CD sound is line in
internet sound is wav
try double clicking on a wav file in the windows Media folder.
it probably won't play either.
go to control panel\sounds and check it out.
your wav control is either way down or muted.

One of two things, first could be a virus, tie up too much memory and you lose sound, the second I have found to be having a media player whether it be realplayer or quicktime
with the volume turned down affects everything else even when the program isnt running and you have the volume all the way up in the bottom panel
