Most "dietary fiber" is insoluble parts of plant cells (i.e. cellulose). The fibre in paper is the part of the tree that doesn't dissolve during the pulping process, so it is similar to the fiber in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, etc. It probably would pass through your digestive system in pretty much the same way as regular food-based fiber does (absorb water, add bulk, carry unwanted material away, all the good stuff that dietary fiber does). However, paper has been processed with a lot of toxic chemicals, like bleaching agents and heavy duty solvents to remove the starches and sugars, and can also have a fairly low pH. Probably not the best thing for you to eat in any quantities.

I eat both for fiber (and many other things). However, just because it is cereal, does not mean it is healthy. In the US, Kellogg's is advertising that two of their kid marketed fruit flavored cereals have three grams of fiber per serving. In addition to that, they also have artificial colors, artificial flavors, white flour, etc. Not something I would give my daughter, who gets plenty of whole grains and whole fruit. (I don't buy anything from Kellogg's. They make claims and imply that their food is healthy, but contain artificial stuff.) I just know that I eat plenty of whole grains (yesterday, I wound up having nine slices of all natural whole wheat bread, in addition to fruits and veggies) and I have no trouble with being regular. (I try and avoid anything with enriched [white] flour, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oils, hydrogenated oils, artificial colors, artificial flavors and anything that looks as though it was created in a lab by humans and not in nature by God.) Usually, when I have trouble "going" it is either because I have not eaten well the previous day and/or it is a pregnancy side effect. (I'm 26 weeks pregnant.) Just my own experience.

Paper is made from trees. Recycled paper is made from paper that was made from trees. If you want to eat recycled paper you should be an organism that eats trees. It will not damage you, but I wouldn't eat a steady diet of it.

I suppose if you're a woodpecker or a beaver, but as a human, I wouldn't eat any kind of paper. Who knows what was crawling on that tree?
