During the 1st century Roman rule was having a hard time keeping the uprisings and divisions in check. Persecution was a common thing and Christians were the most heavily persecuted and threatened communities. In order to give those Christians hope and to instill in them the strength to hold fast, John of Patmos*, the writer of the book of Revelation, wrote to the 7 churches of Asia.
When he was writing, he really believed that Jesus would be back within his lifetime. He uses Jesus' actual words in the final chapter, quoting him three times with this phrase, "I am coming soon!" The writer used the word 'soon' to embolden each community. Because the Bible is often read in a literal sense; what was once entended to simply bolster a community of believers became Jesus' biggest unfulfilled prophecy.

This is not in the Bible.
Jesus said, that there would be one standing there that would not die until he saw the Son of man coming and the Lord was referring to John because John went up to heaven in Revelation and saw not only the return of Christ in a vision, but the complete end of the old earth and the beginning of the new earth. The authors? That was Jesus himself who said he would return within the lifetimes of his diciples. Twas Jesus that lied, not the authors. They just wrote what they were told.

I'm going to go with:
Because god doesn't exist.
and furthermore their is no actual evidence for Jesus as a historical figure either. Isn't it funny how the first century AD is the best recorded period in human history yet NOT EVEN ONE contemporaneous historian records Jesus?

yes isn't it funny how modern day Christians ignore that remark about how Jesus promised he would return during the lifetimes of his disciples/

They were wrong about a lot more than that.
Lets face it, basing your life on what they wrote is about as reliable as basing it on tabloid journalism.

If you are talking about Matthew 24, then read it again. You missed it.

Er... what? Jesus never returned. He died, rotted, and that was the end of it.

Was it a promise? Or, was it an attitude, in order to be ready?
