Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim - In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Hello. The word Jihad comes from the Arabic root meaning "struggle". A jihad can mean a struggle to be better person, which is an internal struggle of the heart, or it can mean an outward battle, such as fighting against those who are oppressing you and not allowing you to practice your religion. The Afghanis were making Jihad against the Soviets because the Soviets were trying to oppress them, invaded their country, attacked their women, and slaughtered the men. Wars of aggression are not allowed in Islam and those do not qualify as jihad, all the protestations of warmongers to the contrary.
The Talibaan (meaning "students") is a group of people in Afghanistan who want to completely institute Islamic Law in their country. I applaud their desire to live according to the Qur'an and Sunnah, but I feel that they use clumsy means to attempt to fulfill this goal. The result is as you see it today; Afghanistan is a narco-state farther away from Islam than ever before. May Allah guide those people and help them to repent from planting this murderous crop, Ameen.
May Allah guide you to that which is best in this world and the next. Ameen.
Fi Aman Allah,
Nancy Umm Abdel Hamid

Jihad is the actual Holy War itself. The Taliban is the organization.

"Jihad" is defined as some kind of "holy war" (although to me those two words never belong together). The Taliban are a fundamentalist Islamic organization that practice "jihad" to attempt to achieve their goals. That's the difference - they are related, just not exactly the same thing.

Jihad: Spiritual Struggle (parenting, caring for sick family members and fighting in wars as well)
Taliban: One of many feuding groups in Afghanistan, it is political and not religious.
