Evil people do know that they are doing wrong, tho one would be hard put to get them to admit it. Everyone is born with an innate sense of right and wrong, which is further tempered by society. Yes, people are aware of their sins and evil doings. They may or may not care or may or may not be in control of their actions. It's a matter of motive. If they do not care then they are just evil. If they do care, but cannot control themselves, it is a mental illness.
Motivation for evil? Some people just love evil ways.
Sending you a smile to help pick up your day.

Part of the reason is men do not have all the facts, because a part of their nature has been rendered inoperative through what the Bible calls sin. Men act like intelligent animals serving their best interest at the expense of others because they have been rendered oblivious to the fact there is an omniscient omnipotent holy God to whom they must render an account of their actions. Adam died the day he sinned. He did not die physically, because it is not through the body that we know God. He died spiritually, being alienated from a true understanding of the nature of God when his own faculties were marred by sin. Unless we regain a true knowledge of God, we are doomed to endlessly repeat our folly. That is where the Gospel comes in. Only through faith in the message about a God who suffered for His own creatures can we see God again as He truly is.
Only then can we begin to do the right thing, for the right reason, namely love.

If they are truly "evil," then they know they are doing wrong, yet they do it anyhow. But a lot of what is considered "evil" lies in the eyes of the beholder. Did Hitler know what he was doing was wrong? Joseph Stalin? Saddam Hussein? All of these men felt that they were doing what was right in their own minds, yet many people believe them to be evil people. So, it's all about perspective. What drives someone to do wrong when they know it is wrong? A lot of time, addiction, religion, love, hate. They all contribute to behavior that breaks either ethical or moral laws.

Yes. But I believe that there are a lot fewer evil people in the world than people might think. A lot of these so-called evil ones are probably just mentally ill.
The logical reason is because they get satisfaction out of it. At some point in their lives they began to believe that this was the only way to get pleasure and meaning in their lives. Then they might continue because they are afraid of trying to live any other way. Or maybe they can't imagine living any other way.

First you have to define "evil." What we consider evil might be the norm in other societies. Im pretty sure that murdering someone would be considered an evil act in our (America) society, but in the middle east they stone people on a regular basis for things like going against religion or committing adultery and nobody would think that stoning someone to death is evil; infact they think the person they are stoning is evil and not the crowd throwing the stones.

You have decided what is evil and what is not. From their view they are perfectly right. Hitler was absolutely convinced that what he was doing was right for the species and for god. But then so does George Shrub. Pope Pius thought he was doing right by supporting Hitler. Pope Innocence the 3rd thought he was right when he slughtered million across europe. Even burning churches down with the people inside. He said that unbelievers where hiding with the faithful and they should all be killed because god would know his own. Look at it from the other side and then tell me it is wrong or evil.

Let's say a 35 year old accountant wants to inherit his ageing mother's wealth but she is spending a lot of it away quickly, so he decides to kill her and make it look like an accident. He knows that his actions are morally wrong, that it infringes upon his mother's right to live, does harm to her welfare, and that this action goes against his responsibility to care for her, but he selfishly decides to put himself first.
If a mentally ill patient cuts his friend's hand in order to save her from going to hell, this person is suffering from mental illness; he believes that he is doing beneficence to her rather than invoking harm to his friend. I wouldn't say this person is evil, just mistaken. A physician who misdiagnoses his/her patient's condition for another, may end up providing treatment which would worsen the patient's health. However he/she is not acting out of evil, just misguidance.

naw, just kidding.
Depends on your perception of evil. I don't really embrace the concept. I think that we all have good and evil tendencies. We're all human, after all. :p
There are many mental illnesses out there that would cause someone to act a certain way- probably deemed "evil". And no- possession isn't real- unless we're talking about drugs... :p

I think that some people do evil things because of severe mental illness. But I believe also that there are people who have no conscience. It just doesn't exist in them.
