A raw meat diet is your dogs natural diet. Along with fruits and veggies, and even grains. (although grains are not easily digested) If you decide to feed raw meat, please add the veggies, and fruit. Carrots, apples, etcc. Even some cottage cheese, peas, green beans. OR, check out a pet food called EVO. A company called Natura makes it, and it is as close to a raw diet as you can get, loaded with veggies and fruit and other natural foods that are a natural part of your dogs diet. You can feed raw meat, and don't have to cook it. He will not get worms. His stomach acids get rid of all the bacteria while digesting. Just remember, people invented dog food. Not dogs. The raw diet is the best thing you can do for him. Better coat, skin, and health. Check out natura on line. It will give you all the info you need.

Raw meat can be just as harmful to your pup as it can be to you. Myths have some people believing that dogs are only meat eaters but that is not true they need their carbs and nutrients from plants also, Cats are the ones that are meat only. Pedigree is an ok over the counter food but if you are wanting a premium diet for you pup buy a premium food. Science Diet Eukanuba etc. Just remember you get what you pay for. Foods below Pedigree just aren't going to be a well balanced diet. **Clearly some people write facts that they have not researched read the back of the bags to make sure the food has passed national standards. Obviously some people have opinions regarding the so called Premium brands "Science Diet" etc. but almost every vet office has it in their clinic and the Doctors not the people on here know best. Especially the ones who have only tried it out for 2 months. Talk to you vet. :) If you would like information on what is required for a canine balanced diet let me know I would be happy to give you the information. Just for those who want the answer to how did pups eat before kibble. Wild Canines get their fiber and other non meat nutrients by eating the stomach of their prey first it contains the fiber most of the other nutrients that they can not get from meat alone... pure raw meat is a bit different.

It works just fine ... I've been raw feeding 2 dogs for 5 years. And, I agree with all the other posts from people who are raw feeding re the benefits of the BARF diet. Good reads are Dr. Billinghurst , "Give Your Dog a Bone" and Kymypthy R. Schultze, "Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats". Don't do it without researching the diet, it's a little more complex than just giving your dog a raw hamburger for breakfast. I did a lot of reading and research before I starting this raw feeding journey to be sure I understood the nutritional needs of my animals. There's a wealth of info. on Google if you type in BARF diets. By the way, it's a not accurate that dogs get bacterial infections from raw meat, when they eat their stomachs secrete highly acidic fliuds which kills any bacteria ingested.

I just put all of my dogs, (5) on it a month ago. I do have a farm and raise ducks, rabbits, goats and when hunting season is here the turkey and deer are in play also. The ducks can also supply the eggs as well as meat and the goats give milk.
I have a Corgi ready to whelp(puppies) in 6 days and she has been fed raw. They DON'T start to crave blood as the blood is drained from the animal anyway.
You can go to the yahoo groups and type in what you are looking for. There are several to choose from and I'm on 3 of them. Good reading and you can also ask questions.
I don't feed veggies or anything cooked. They have wonderful coats and my Border Collie has food allergies with commercial foods so that's why I started feeding raw. I find it cheaper but then again I do raise their food, we eat it also but not raw.

You know, I did try this for about two weeks on my chocolate lab when he was a year old and he got a bad case of the runs. I've studied the benefits of raw meat diets and I think they work best for people. If you are looking for a great food for your dog I always suggest Natural Balance to my clients. It's so healthy and nutrious I could eat it everyday and be perfectly nutritionally balanced. Hope this helps :)

Here's a site I used:
http://www.rawdogranch.com
I liked it because it was comprehensive and simple to follow. My dogs did well on the diet but when I moved and had little freezer space, I went back to feeding my dog a kibble that has not been on the recall lists of recent times.
I'd prefer to have kept them on that diet, but I have three large dogs and it was hard for me to keep up on.
I'd rank the raw diet with five paws up- but get references from people that are using the diet and where you know the recommended diet is sufficient for your dog.
If you have a dog that tends to "gulp" and swallow big pieces of bone, raw or not that can be damaging. One of my dogs is like that so I would grind the raw meaty bones.
Check out the link and I am sure others will be/are already, posted.

I would recommend The Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care by C J Puotinen. It has all the information you need to feed your pet the raw food diet. I have 17 cats (rescues) and with that many I can't do it exclusively but feed them the raw food on a regular basis and the cats are much healthier and my vet bills are almost non existent. It will also keep flea and tick problems down, an animal eating a truly healthy diet will not have fleas.

its a great diet, make sure your dog is getting all of its required nutrients. Raw food is best bc that's how your dog is designed to eat. NEVER cook it. Dogs have enzymes in their stomach especially designed for raw meat and raw bone. Make sure its a complete diet..not just meat..there are raw varieties you can buy that have a complete balance of nutrients You will notice a healthy appearance of your dog and less poop

I have switched my dog to a "raw diet"..although it is a prepped food (Mountain Dog)
Since switching Tobey, he maintains weight better, he finishes every meal, he LOVES it, his skin and coat are much healthier looking, he poops less and in general seems more healthy.
As a plus for me, it's cheaper than the kibble diet he was on. A $40 dollar bag lasted me just 18 days..$60 in the Mountain Dog lasts me 40 days..
