My first job was a summer job when I was 18 working for Columbia Manufacturing Co., in Westfield Massachusetts. They were a bicycle manufacturer, and I found myself working various jobs within the factory, with finally ending up working on the assembly line. That was 30 years ago.

My first job was walking through a muddy corn field, picking up the ears that the cornpicker (machine) had dropped on the ground. The temperature was about 35 or 40, and my socks and my gloves were soon wet, so I was pretty miserable.
I got to keep the corn I gleaned, which amounted to about 2 bushels an hour. (The farmer benefitted, because the kernels on the corn would have sprouted the next spring. Corn is a weed when you've planted beans or wheat.)
The price of corn was about 65c/bushel back then. You might not think that was much, but that was good money in the 60s. Gas was 28.9, a daily newspaper was 7c, a quarter-pound hamburger was 25c, and a Hershey bar was 5c. I bought myself a three-speed english racer bicycle, nicer than anything my friends were riding, for about $35.
I lived 2 miles outside a town of 2500, so there weren't 5 or 10 choices - there were *zero* choices. If you wanted a job, you had to *make* a job - and actually, learning how to make a job has been very valuable to me since. If you make your own job, you're going to be the boss, and not only is it better to give orders than to take them, but the boss is the first one hired, and the last one fired.

HARVARD! Seriously, my first job was in Harvard when I was also 14. I got paid $10 an hour doing simple office tasks such as stamping books and organizing paper. Though I did not find this job myself. My friend told me about this job because her father works for Harvard and they were hiring temporary positions. One of the best ways to find jobs, especially if you are young, is to have sources and ask your friends. Their parents can work for a company that needs to hire. But be sure that they don't take advantage of you and check out the minimum wage they can have in your community. Around here in New York, the least they can pay teenagers are $7.50 an hour. Anything less is considered child labor. Good Luck!!!

my 1st job was actually volunteer work (@ 18yrs) yup I volunteered at a hospital 4 6 months than i applied at walmart, burgerking, and an antique shop. The people at the antique shop called me 1st and then i told them that i was volunteering and they was impressed so i started the next week! Then 3 weeks later walmart calls me and i decide to go there because that was the MAIN place i wanted to work and the antique shop wasnt payin too well, 8/ hr and i cudnt work that many hours (until i went to walmart).
they were also impressed w/ the fact that i volunteered for 6 months and they brushed the antique part away cuz i was there to short.
The point im trying to tell u is, if u end up jobless, volunteer somewhere, go to a hospital or a school (your school maybe). Building a gud resume really makes it easier for ppl to want to hire you.

My first job when i was 17 was at an apartment complex. I was the "concierge" which is basically a fancy word for gopher. I would go for this or go for that. I would answer the phone, make copies, file papers, distribute letters to residents stuff like that. Easy stuff. I think I made about $9.00/hr.

The best job for you is to start a dog walking business and lawn care businees in your neighborhood, its your own hours and it's cheap. My two 12 year old sons do it now and make around 300 a month.
