I understand your frustration and share it. But the reason why this poll matters is it effects the next election. Who ever is elected democrat or republican will inherit this war. The democrats position is to pull out regardless if the surge is working or not. So if we the people believe the surge isn't working then we the people will vote for a democrat and well I'm sure you know what will happen to Iraq.
My aggravation is more with political motivation. The democrats are invested in the US losing the war now. When I say invested, they have made speeches, press releases, told us in many different ways that the War in Iraq is lost and we need to leave now. So they will fight tooth and nail to make sure the American people see all the negatives about whatever we do there. They know if they are wrong in Iraq it will be completely destructive to their party. Who is left in the middle? The american soldier!

Brad V... Bush has only been in Iraq for Approximately... oh... I don't know... 20 hrs or so. If the diplomats, secretaries, and congressmen have spent more then 24 hours there then more power to them.
As far as the surge is concerned, what does it matter. If it wasn't working, and I have to believe it is, I would be more then a bit concerned about the fate of the nation. However, the important question is what happens when the troops HAVE to be recalled. I am hedging my bet that all hell will break out again.
Proof needed I know. In New Jersey, several years ago, I believe in 1993. Then Governor, Christie Todd Whitman, tried to stem the violence in Camden, America's poorest city, and often its most dangerous, by declaring martial law and bringing in an abundance of state troopers into the city. During that time the murder rate dropped, the crime rate dropped, and Camden was a safer place to be. When the troopers left, Camden was back to being the murder capital of the USA in 1994 and 1995.
If an American city, which is nowhere near as impovrished or chaotic as the cities in Iraq, goes right back to square one when the reinforcements leave, what do think is going to happen when the extra troops leave Iraq.
The surge and the attention surrounding it is nothing more then a political move exploited by the media and misunderstood by the public that is not solving the main problem. Fixing the mess we made in Iraq so that we can go home. Because as much as I hate the fact that my former brothers in arms are there, America can not afford to leave. And it has nothing to do with our personal security.

Smellyfool, you should run for office, you hit it squarely on the button with your opinion.
I would take it one step further and include these pathetic democrats who run around thinking they have all the answers.
Talk about opinionated ! They take a trip to the middle east that lasts approximately one long weekend, and come back the new authority on Iraq.
Sadly, there are people in the US that eat up this crap. They really believe these people have a grasp on the war effort. I often wonder how many badly wounded vets they visit while on these trips. I think that it is none.

Based on reports coming out of Iraq, our fellow US citizens are entitled to make their own assumptions and form their own opinions. Given the history of rhetoric and spin put out by the current administration, it's easy to see how the American pubilc is somewhat doubtful of what they hear. In August of '07 alone, there were 1,800 Iraqi deaths. Are we to believe that the violence is declining with the presence of such information? By what measure has the surge been deemed successful? US troops still only control a fraction of the country, US troops are still dying on a daily basis, Iraqi civilians are still being killed on a daily basis and in almost five years we've managed to kill just 12,000 "insurgents." And who knows WHO those "insurgents" are given the vauge definitions of such terminology which this administration so wantonly uses. It's right up there with their definition of "enemy combatant," "torture," and "success."

Who cares if people "think" the surge is working anyway? The question is- "is it working?" Gen Petreaus said it is- so it is. If only the news agencies would start reporting the "news" and not people's opinions!

To me,polls are worthless. Who are they polling and how are they wording the questions???? I am 60 and have never even seen a pollster, so I really doubt their authenticity. And if CNN (Communist Network News) provides results of an alleged poll, you can bet it's biased.

Of course it's working. The surge is designed to keep GWB afloat until the end of his term in office. If that requires throwing children into a liquidiser and sodomising the Pope, well that's politics.
