want to cool off. I have a family member who thinks that running the fans keeps the house cooler. But why must you run the ceiling fan and close the door to the room. Plus I'm not 100% convinced that running 6 ceiling fans keeps the house cooler vs. the a/c moving the air and the cost of running the ceiling fans. So, whats more efficient? A/C plus ceiling fans or A/C plus ceiling fans only when you are in that particular room.

The only surefire method to prove which is more efficient is to do a comparison of three test-months.

Try a month of solid AC and month of limited ceiling fan and AC, finally a month of just ceiling fans.

You'll probably find that you're paying a higher utility bill when you run the AC alone without the ceiling fans. But for me, if I'm not in a room, I don't like to leave appliances (and fans) running!

The most efficent way is to hook up a portable swamp cooler or window cooler and not use the A/C at all, unless it it very humid outside and you have to. As for the ceiling fans or any other type of fan, all a fan does is move the air. It does not cool it down at all. You feel a breeze and think its cool but actually you are only moving whatever heat that is always in the room. Turn the fans off when you are not in the room. That way you won't be simply wasting electricity and will lower your electric bill. Only use the fan in the room you are in. .....PS. My hubby works for an electric company and we had this conversation about two months ago which proves in fact, I DO listen to him...LOL

Ceiling fans do not cool the air. They circulate the air that is in the room and it feels cooler.Turn the fans off in the rooms that you are not in. When you enter the room turn it on. You will feel cooler within a minute or two. You will save money this way. I know a lot of people are not going to believe me but that's OK. Go to your local electric company's website and look around a bit. You will find this information there.

Central air circulates all over, air conditioning can only do so much depends on the size of the rooms and or open space. Some people just like air moving in a room all the time when central air cuts off no air movement. Its not really more economically but more about comfort.I see no reason to have more air in a room you are not going to be in for several hours. So turn off fan there.Since my ceiling fan and air conditioner are in the same room i find the air conditioning works best without the ceiling fan on.Reverse is true for winter. As it is floor heat.If your registers are ceiling high it probably does work better but if they are floor mounted then probably not.Hope this helps.

Hi'
I am not an expert but I try my best to be comfortable and keep my bills down. My house, two floors withe a den with a cieling as high as the second floor. I keep my cieling fans on low 24/7 and I have floor fans in the den and one one the second floor open space (landing)...I have these on almost 24/7 meaning July, August and some of Sept. I work full time...leave 6AM and return at 5 PM. I turn my thermostat up during the day to 88 degrees....when I get home my house is confortable but not cool. If it is warm when I get home I turn the thermostat down to 76 degrees until I go to bed. I pay budget bills to Peco. I have paid $40.00 this year over my monthly budget. This works for me, it may work for you.

I would use the fans just when you are in that room if you are going to shut the door when you use it you might as well be in there or you are keeping that room cool for nothing.
