I grew up with two shih tzu's and they were wodnerful pets. I dont really remember them when they were really young (b/c I was too young), but from what I remember, they were pretty calm dogs. Not a lot of barking at all, except one one of them got really old and started barking at nothing, but she had to be put down shortly after that b/c of health problems.
They don't need to much exersize from what I remember, and were never aggressive towards me, my two siblings, or any of our friends.
Good Luck!

Here's the story, and I'm sorry it's too late for you hearing it. MANY pet stores use puppy mills which are horrible to animals!! The pet store isn't going to tell you the truth about that ... also any reputable pet store will give you more than a little 3 - day warranty ... and also, something was already wrong with this little pup's foot or leg. (You said you asked why it was limping in the pet store!) Their answer is ridiculous. You have two decent choices ... #1 - find a good vet and explain your situation and see if they can help. Your little pup is already unhealthy and you may have a hard time with her forever, because of her mistreatment from a puppy mill and a bad pet store. If you choose to keep her, good luck! Choice #2 is: Take someone with you (for support), and your pup, BACK to the pet store and insist on a FULL REFUND! If they refuse, (and remember to remind them that she was already limping AT their store), let them know that you will be taking this dog to a vet AND the local newspaper and will be asking for an investigation of their pet store, so be ready TOMORROW with all their paperwork of where ALL of their animals have come from, how soon the animals left their mothers and make sure all the animals can be traced to every breeder, and make sure the breeders have all the proof they will need. Then say that you hope they haven't been lying to you. IF, and it's a big if ... they take the puppy back, don't worry. It's possible this little dog will never be able to be a good pet. For your own sanity, you need a good pet ... sorry it sounds so bad! By the way ... I know you can't afford a lawsuit, but there are a lot of animal rights groups. That could be a 3rd choice, and THEY would DEFINITELY get an investigation going, plus they'd have your little pup checked out for free. Animals have rights, too!

For an small not aggressive dog

I love shih tzus! Like all dogs, their behavior and temperament depends mostly on how they are raised.
Most shih tzus I have known have been very cuddly, people-dependant, only-slightly-yappy, super happy dogs.
They are impressively good with children of all ages.
You can leave them alone for an afternoon but don't be suprised if they are all over you when you get home.
They don't eat much and require the same healthcare as other dogs. Price depends on where you live and the breeder you go to, and wether they are registered or not.

The suggestion of an obedience class is an excellent one. Read here https://tr.im/BIncI
It will help your dog learn to behave around other dogs, and help keep your training moving forward as you'll want to be prepared for the next class. Also, a good instructor can be a wonderful resource, someone to help you with any questions or concerns about your dog. Leash training can take a LOT of time and patience, depending upon the dog. I'm not sure what you mean by 'horrible on a leash' but my basic suggestion is that you take a lot of yummy treats with you on walks. When your dog behaves well on the leash (not pulling) praise her and give her treats. Change direction a lot so that she learns to pay attention to YOU and where you are going. It's also helpful to teach a "Watch Me" command such that whenever your dog looks at you you praise her and give her a treat. About chewing, yes a Kong is a great chew toy. Some dogs also like Nylabone brand bones. I suggest also teaching a "Leave It" command. You use this when she shows interest in chewing on something she shouldn't. Then immediately give her something she is allowed to chew, such as the Kong stuffed with somethig yummy. This same command will be helpful on walks when she wants to sniff or eat something she shouldn't. Again, when she does leave the item alone, be sure to give lots of praise. I would look into an obedience class right away. I think that you'll find that a good obedience class can help enormously! Good luck and enjoy your new dog.

My shih tzus were brother & sister. Yappy with each other at play. My female would get loud with larger dogs, Labs & Great Danes, while here brother let her do all the talking. They loved kids, were okay alone because they had each other. They loved kids but they can't take rough handling. Grooming is a big expense since there is alot of hair on that small package. There are alot of health issues with them if they are not bred well. They can injure their eyes easily. Do alot of research before you make a purchase.

We have a beautiful year old Shih Tzu and he is a wonderful pet He is not yappy but when he barks, he barks... LOL...
He loves all people. He is very spoiled and doesn't like to be left alone, but he does fine when he is.
This is a very active, hyper breed and should have a regular exercise routine daily. A 30-45 minute walk twice a day is great for the dog and of course, outdoor playtime is good.
This is long haired breed, but we keep ours cut short. A visit to the groomer every 6-8 weeks works out well.
Our dog (Koda) is not aggressive but he does growl when we try to take his favorite toy away from him so we can play with him. He loves for us to throw it so he can go get it and bring it back to us, but he doesn't like to let it go.
Our little fur ball was $600 and on average is very affordable to keep.

Shih tzus are great dogs. The important thing is to see the puppy's parents and make sure you them. They should not be yappy and should treat you like their long lost friend. They should not aggresive. If i put mine in his crate (alone) I have to careful not to forget him as he is so quiet. He loves my nephews and neice ( 9, 7 and 2 years) and he is very gentle with my 96 year old grandmother.Beware if the breeder has to shut the mother up in order for you to see her puppies, she should be friendly enough not to mind. Bichon Frise also makes great pets for families. Both require regular grooming. Some people groom themselves which will save money but requires much patience and can be very difficult. If you go with professional grooming it will be $35-$45 per visit, once every 4-8 weeks. My mom's bichon requires grooming less frequently than my shih tzu. By the way, it"s pronounced "sheed zoo".Bichon usually cost more than shih tzus ($500 vs $1000) and are sometimes prone to more allergies.

if i were you i would check out petfinder.com and look at small dogs for adoption near you. you can also search for dogs that get along well with kids and are small and for adoption.
Remember each individual dog is different but generally
shih tzus aren't yappers they do occasionally bark
all dogs need plenty of attention especially puppies but most dogs will be fine if left alone for a short time of course theyd rather you were with them.
shh tzus like to play but dont need lots of exercise. a couple short walks a day should be sufficient with some play time and a longer walk on the weekend.
if socialized with other dogs then no they wont be dog aggressive. on petfinder.com you can also search small dogs that get along well with other dogs.
my friend has a shih and has two kids 8 and 10 and they get along great.just teach kids to be respectful to the dog.
from petfinder.com they are $50-200 to adopt )includes fixing, shots, etc)
from a reputable breeder 4750-1000+
An avergae dog cost around $1000 a year to keep(provided no vet emergencies)
if you list your location i will happily serach for small dogs thta fit your criteria for adoption
other small breeds that may interest you:king charles spaniel, havanese, bichon frise.
Keep in mind shih tzus will ahve to be groomed approx evry 6 weeks (along with some other breeds)
