A friend of mine is in the air force. He's enlisted and today he ended up getting into a fight and punched an officer. He ended up getting arrested. He also received a DUI in february. He said he will probably be kicked out, but isnt sure. Anyone have an clue on what will likely happen to him? He says he doesnt want to stay in any longer as it is. He's 24.

honesty, i know he did a bad thing, but some of you are being quite harsh. I've known my fair share of officers and they can be asses esp to the enlisted guys. My dad was officer so it's not like i have something against all of them...but to say someone is the scum of the earth just because they punched one is over the top. the military isnt for everyone and there are certainly stressful times now esp when they're away from all of their loved ones.
Thank you

Ok, if he knew the officer was an officer and he punched him, he is in for a world of trouble. Striking an officer is a punishable offense under the the UCMJ and he could be prosecuted and serve time in a military prison. If that doesn't happen, the officer can press charges in the civilian court system. At the very least, he is going to be looking at a dishonorable discharge (not great for future employment, disqualifies him from financial aide funded by the government among other things). He has done a number on his future. Even if he didn't know the guy was an officer, talking crap isn't bad enough to risk your future over by getting into a fight.

Well it is definitely a court martial offense. As far as punishment goes, it depends on the circumstances.
He can forget the unable to adapt approach. He already finished his training and has been assigned to a regular unit. The DUI is not going to help matters either. But yeah, his life is pretty much over as far as the military goes. And he could end up with some jail time, which will really cut down on his chances for a real future. Can he say "you want fries with that".

He will, at minimum, appear before his commanding officer for non-judicial punishment under Article 15 of the United Code of Military Justice. But, I suspect he will be given at least a Special Court-Martial for striking a superior officer. That's a very serious charge. If he is convicted, a special court-martial can award him a Bad Conduct Discharge, imprisonment and fines in the form of loss of pay and allowances.

he will be kicked out. striking an Officer is a Court Martial offense. add to that his previous DUI, and they will not be willing to give him any more chances.
He will also lose any and all veteran's benefits.. to include his GI Bill and any VA programs such as home loans and vocational training. Also, count on him doing time in the brig before they let him go.

Your friend sounds like a drunk, a jerk and a quitter.
Punching an officer could possibly get him jail time.
It really doesn't matter that he doesn't want to stay in, they will probably toss him out on his ear, hopefully, with a Dishonorable Discharge. That disgrace would follow him for the rest of his life, and if you don't think that matters much, you would be wrong.
g-day!

He'll most likely get a article 15 or a few article 15's for assault and bad conduct he'll get pay reduction and a rank reduction.he'll have to talk to a commanding officer about getting out though but if they want him out as well they'll start his paperwork as soon as he says the word he'll probably be chaptered out under a Chapter-11 failure to adapt or a Uncharacterized Discharge

Either they will court martial him and send him to a military prison or they will kick him out. Either way he sounds like a real winner.

If he's lucky, he'lll get a dishonorable discharge. If he gets what he deserves, that will still happen--and he will do about 5 years in a federal prison.
