I just received a phone call from a representative of sickle cell anemia. He said that my newborn has the trait but not the actual disease. What does this mean? Can it lead to the disease?...He wants me to meet with him, is this for the association or for my daughters own health?

I am native american and my daughters father is mixed black. I was also sent a paper saying that she was given a test at the hospital and he would be giving me a call.

Someone just called you out of the blue? How would this person know your baby has cycle cell trait? Why wouldn't your doctor tell you about this? Where does he want you to meet him? It sounds really fishy to me.
Here's the deal: If you have sickle cell trait, you do not get the disease, but you could pass it down to your children. If your baby has the trait s/he obviously got it from either you or the father which means that whichever one of you has the trait could give another child the disease (a horrible thing to live with and any one with the trait should not have children). In order to have the trait OR the disease, there has to be a black ancestor somewhere along the line. You never stated your race or the father's race.
Hope this helps.
Niffer - sickle cell is NOT only in African Americans. It can be in any black person regardless of their current citizenship - black brits, Africans, Jamaican blacks, etc.

This means that your baby is a carrier of the disease. This means that she has one gene for normal hemoglobin, and another for sickle cell. This CANNOT lead to the sickle cell disease, you have to be born with it. Either you are her father also has to be a carrier, so the Representative will probably talk to you about what this means as far as the people you choose to have children with.

No, your baby will not get the disease, however if when he is an adult and has a child, and the mother of the baby also has the sicklecell trait, their child will have the disease. Now not trying to be judgemental but your avatar is a caucasian carracter, is your baby part african american? Sickle cell is only in carried in people of african american decent.

no she won't have it. it means that if she has a child with a partner that also has the trait, the child is very likely to have sickle cell. i'm wondering why some stranger is calling you instead of your doctor. sounds fishy to me. how would some stranger have gotten your child's info? call your doctor 9or whoever did the test) first to see if the child actually has it.

i don't remember exactly. it's either he'll only be a carrier, or only some of his cells will be sickle-ee. either way, without two alleles for it, it's not going to be full-blown. fun fact: sickle-shaped blood cells cannot be infected by malaria.

Follow Bryce K advice and, fast: if that person calls back, find out some facts about him/her and, call your doctor in the meantime and then the police department and tell them what ensued, you don't know what they maybe up to.

Yes, your daughter does have it and, if she has a partner with it they will have babies the will carry it and have problems with it.
