Plant the brown chestnut about 4 inches (10 cm) deep in the soil where you intend it to grow, as it will not like to be transplanted later. The chestnut (which is actually a seed) needs frost to break its dormancy. If you are in a warm climate, place the chestnut in a bag in the freezing compartment of the fridge (the main freezer may be too cold) for two weeks before planting. It may be worth planting several, and weeding out the weaker ones, although I struck lucky first time.

Bury the brown nut in the fall, about 3 inches deep. You have to lay a board over the spot and leave it all winter, along about the first of March remove the board, maybe first of April if you live in the North, and it should sprout when the weather warms up.
