I'm not sure how old you are but believe that what you see on TV isn't real. None of that really happens. You don't solve crimes in an hour.

Here's what you do, when you're old enough to take the police exam, tell them you want to work for the cops really badly because you want to carry a gun and do the fun stuff. See, how fast they tell you to have a nice day.

First you need an education. At least 60 credit hours in the majority of municipalities to become a detective. It doesn't matter what you get a degree in, just that you do.. it could be a degree in doggy grooming and that would be ok.

Once you have your education in hand, you apply to police stations you want to work at. That involves ALOT of testing, physical fitness, background (and believe me they are EXTREMELY thurough) and then a polygraph test to determine wether you've lied at all on your application. If you have, automatic disqualifier. You must have a clean criminal record and although not required, a clean traffic record helps alot.

After that is done, you need to wait until a spot opens up for you, then you get sent to the academy and join the force. You're probably going to be on the force for a good 5 or 6 years before you get to become a detective. But before you get to become up, there are TONS of tests to take and interviews to do, to qualify.

So if the first 5 or 6 years doesn't sound like "fun stuff", sorry.

every detective starts off as a cop, if you think that patrol life is no fun, trust me sitting behind a desk with hundreds of files, news media and hungry family members looking for justice is no fun, and worst off spending time writing lengthy reports, testifying in court getting subpoenas and search warrants is no fun either and never going home or vacation is another.

at least with patrol you just sit and watch dumb drivers do dumb stuff and get to go home.

You have to put three to five years on Patrol before you are eligible to do anything else. If you don't know how to be a Patrol Officer, you will be useless as a detective.

If you hate patrol, find another potential career.

You need an English raincoat, a magnifying glass, and one of those hats that turn up in the front and back. Then you need a faithful assistant who says "Eh wot" a lot. Best luck.
