It's because when they get to heaven, if they don't want that woman to be their wife anymore, she can't go looking him up. You can't find anyone if you don't know their name.

The correct terminology is "New Name" and it is not a "temple name" (Revelation 2:17) When my husband and I were married in the temple, he wrote down both the new names on a little slip of paper to remember them, and then forgot and dropped it on the floor. I accidently picked it up and read both names, so I know his. I have benn married for 35 years and have had no ill effects from this so far. I was not struck by lightning. At the time I asked my stake president what to do. He said it was not serious and just forget about it. But you know, you just reminded me. So you are the culprit, not I.
Seriously, it is part of the priesthood order and the woman being subject to her husband in ecclesiastical things. In the temple marriage ceremony the husband takes his wife by the hand, through the veil of the temple and the giving of the new name is part of this. It is symbolizing entrance together into the heavenly kingdom and the extending the bonds of marriage and family beyond this life into eternity. Mormons don't marry "till death do you part." in the temple.
Later note: Isn't it interesting when people find something ludicrous, quaint or funny that they don't understand, and they like to make something that is precious or sacred to others look weird. I just would say that there are things in each of your traditions and religious practices that are perfectly lovely and precious to you that the rest of us could find ridiculous and without meaning because we dont understand. I would say to you, it shows your immaturity and bad manners to make fun of things you dont understand. If you are interested in putting that much energy into it, I suggest you do research and find out why people do things as they do.

You likely are not really interested in a answer, but some of the readers might be interested now.
First no, the husband would not need to get a new one.
Second, No the wife would not be kicked out of the church.
Third, The patriarchal order taught in the Temple has the wife following the husband as the husband follows Jesus Christ. Meaning if the husband is worthy to enter Gods kingdom, the wife must enter with the husband. If the husband is not found worthy she dosenot need to have him their to enter.
If the husband tells the wife the name, he could be in trouble, as this is one of the few things he promises to keep secret.

Why are you so full of hate? You are bitter and resentful and you are trying to take it out on us, and it gets annoying after a while. You need to step out of your body for a second, and look at how stupid you sound. Then maybe you will stop. Nobody likes someone who acts like you do. I mean, you are acting like a little girl who got her toy taken away and is screaming and whining.

If you happen to know someone's name, oops, but it's not a huge deal, and I really can't see how it would warrant re-naming, much less excommunication. It does not make sense that the husband may possess knowledge that the wife may not under threat of serious penalty.

Had to check in here to see what is going on in an area that I have no knowledge of. From what I read this is something that happens in the religion. No answer gave information that would educate me on the subject. Sad.

B Jones has the answer for you, as well as all the others. Just give it up will you? You only make yourself sound stupid and desperate. Not anything you want to sound like I am sure.

1. Nothing drastic would happen to her
2. No, he would keep it.
3. No
4. It is the order of the priesthood.
Edit; I don't understand why all the Mormon's who've answered have a thumbs down. They've answered the questions that were asked.

This nonsense has NO biblical foundation at all.. The Bible tells us there is one name under heaven where we must be save. That name is Jesus Christ.. All these temple rites don't mean a thing. In the Bible we are told what is required to be saved,, Nothing is said about marriage, keys, signs, or names.. In fact the Temple veil was torn by God top to bottom allowing all people into the Holy of Holies... It is blasphemous to hang it up again!!!! IHS Jim
