I had a friend in Oregon who called regularly through her normal phone company and it was fairly reasonable - a few dollars for a long conversation.

There's such a wide variety of deals. If money is a real issue then you may be able to get a 'calling card' from a newsagent/drugstore that will cost a few cents per minute. (I think mine was 3c per minute to just about anywhere - I used it for Indonesia which is really expensive thru Telstra). These work OK but are a pain in the neck with ringing a thousand numbers and some have dodgy availability.

Another option is to use the voice option on a messenger like Yahoo or MSN. If you both have unlimited Internet, cost = 'free'! You can even get handsets these days that hook to computers for that purpose.

It costs me $A2.50 for 30 minutes (as a block) to call the US through Telstra.

That depends on what your phone company charges. It has nothing to do with Australia. Ask your phone company.
