"As bullets flew above their heads, the young soldier at Pat Tillman's side started praying. "I thought I was praying to myself, but I guess he heard me," Sgt. Bryan O'Neal recalled in an interview Saturday with The Associated Press. "He said something like, 'Hey, O'Neal, why are you praying? God can't help us now."'

wow, that settles it! God is real!
Way to go! Whether this is true or not, the intention is good, but God does not need modern urban stories and myths to prove anything.

Wow, either most people (including atheists) here missed the point of your question, or I'm a complete moron.
Seems to me you're saying Tillman never prayed, never asked for God.

So...God made one of his own soldiers shoot Pat Tillman in the head, and then ordered the officers in charge to remove and burn his clothes, all personal effects, along with his diary, and then have the military lie about it...is that about it?
Sounds like a real loving, merciful thing to do.
Or, are you saying that no Christians have died in Iraq, only atheists?

First I find the "No atheists in foxholes" statement tremendously insulting to the very large number of atheists who have put their lives on the line defending this country.
You account shows the blatant falsehood of it.
Also, I would wish that the person in the foxhole next to be was devoting their full attention on how to actually complete the mission, rather than wasting possibly crucial moments praying to something that:
a) most likely does not exist.
b) Even if he does exist, has been shown to not answer prayers.

SimonT you know absolutely nothing about war so save the pity talk for people who have time to listen to your nonsense. And if you were in a foxhole you would probably be calling mommy if you weren't calling for God. Grow up!

Having been an atheist in an actual foxhole, I am not quite sure what your point is.
The only thing I can say is that when the bullet has your name on it, no amount of praying is going to stop it.

So there are a couple of guys who are freaked out about being in a war zone. One turns to religion for psychological solace, the other is a bit cynical. What difference does it make?
I don't understand the whole business about atheists in foxholes... it's not a big deal. My grandfather fought in Korea and he is an atheist, and my father was in Viet Nam, he is also an atheist.

After they ended the draft most atheists had better sense than to volunteer to get into foxholes.
Patriotism and Christianity are two sides of the same coin.

TRUST ME 95 percent of the time when a person faces death they call upon the Lord, its an instinct built into us to show us that there is a God. I faced death more than once and I know there is alot more on here that has, but from my seat I always started talking to God.

It is true that there will come a time when God can no longer help those who put the Bible in the non-fiction section, and those who worship false prophets, and those who worship themselves, and those who worship money, and those who worship fame, and those who worship idols, and those who worship false Gods, the list goes on. It is all explained in the Final book of the Holy Bible.
