That's a pretty cheap sitter. Kids today in our area starting at $6.00/hour for one kid, $6.50/hr for two kids, and $7.00/hr for 3 or more kids. Then, the more experience they get, the more they charge, and if they drive their own car, well, you can add on a little more for the gas. When my kids were little (I have 2 children), I got their sitters from the daycare they went to. They were older, trained in CPR, and used to taking care of children. They drove their own cars, and I paid them $10.00/hr, but that was 7 plus years ago! I am sure I'd have to pay them more today. If you are just getting started (you didn't say your age) then you can charge less, say, maybe $5.00/hr, they should expect to pick you up and take you home. But 3.00/hr sounds low. Unless you are sitting for people who can't really afford to pay more, you know who you are sitting for, then you could do some negotiating in the price and it's OK. All moms and dads need some time out, and appreciate it when they can afford to do so! Of course, you are building clientel too!

I understand where you are coming from you don't want to over charge your neighbors in a small town, and you don't want to charge them what they can not afford.
If all they can afford is $3 per child then I say it is your decision on what you want to charge.
But I think you are selling yourself short! I used to charge $5 for 1 child and $8 for 2 per hour (and this was only a few years ago when I was working in daycare.)
Like I said use your best judgement just don't let people take advantage of you!

That's how much I charged 20 years ago. :-) Unless you're very young and just being a mother's helper rather than really babysitting, it's too low. The right amount really depends on what part of the country you live in. Ask your friends what they charge, or ask parents you know how much they pay their babysitters. I live in an affluent town outside a major city in the Northeast (probably one of the high-end babysitting markets), and for babysitting my four kids under age 9 I pay $16 ... and I know people who pay $20. I'd guess in most of the country it would be lower, but still definitely higher than $3!

That is way too little . It would depeng on the age the child(en).
1-5 At least 8 bucks
6-12 6 bucks
If one child regular price and 2 or more children 2 dollars cheaper

it depends how long you babysit for...if your talking like a few hours at night while parents go out i would charge more but if your talking like regular work hours while parents are at work then $3 is average. Think of it like this though...40 hours a week x 4 weeks would give you $480 (not alot to you but alot to them) Most parents don't pay that for regualr child care...they get a special rate. The average in California is $10-$12 per day.

I would say it depends on where you live. I personnaly think that is about the right amount, if you are doing the sitting on a regular basis. I have an in home daycare in Kansas and currently charge $85.00/week for over 18 months and $100.00 for infants to 18 months. In my area if I charged more I wouldn't get any clients. Sad but true.

I would charge five or six dollars an hour. But ask the parents if you think that's fair. I paid a babysittter and three teen nannies, all different times, ten dollars an hour. But I have five kids, one girl and four boys, then ages 6-11.

I wish I live in northern Indiana
Where I live, they get between 7 and 10 dollars an hour
That does not mean anything, my sister lives in Fairfield county is Connecticut, and she get 12
I guess it depends on where you live
Do you know anyone who babysits in your area? What do they get. Than you will know it you are charging to little

The key is... how old are you, who are you babysitting, and for how long? If you are babbysitting an animal, then yes, 3.00 an hour is fine. If it is a human, and you are solely responsible, 6-8 dollars an hour per child is appropriate. If you are babysitting a borther or sister, 5 dollars an hour is appropriate. My main concern is for the child at this point. They have parents who are leaving their child with someone who does not know that 3.00 an hour is a tiny amount. and then the child is left with you, and all you feel you are worth is 3.00 an hour..... hope child is ok
