Could you please explain what you mean by that?

Not everybody is selfish. There are people who are selfless and generous and will do their best to help others.
There are of course also those who are very selfish, who may have been brought up to think that the world revolves around them. Try to stay away from these people, look instead for the selfless ones. They will make you feel much better about yourself.

Lack of empathy by being mollycoddled with no discipline resulting in lack of maturity...however a person with too much empathy may end up being taken advantage of causing them to be leery of others motives...thus causing seeming selfish behavior when they are simply protecting themselves from abuse.

GOD'S WORD® Translation (©1995) Proverbs 4:23
Guard your heart more than anything else, because the source of your life flows from it.

If we could manage to guard our heart while successfully practicing GOD'S WORD® Translation (©1995) Matthew 7:1
"Stop judging so that you will not be judged....

while living GOD'S WORD® Translation (©1995) Mark 12:31
The second most important commandment is this: 'Love your neighbor as you love yourself.' No other commandment is greater than these."

Selfishness is result of original sin nature. As our world becomes less focused on Jesus, the results are evident.

Be true to yourself as Shakespeare suggested...you will live and learn as the cliche goes, and someday you will have an answer to your question from your own life experiences.

Vaya con Dios.

Perhaps 'selfish' is not quite the right word?

Unfortunately, there are an awful lot of inconsiderate people out there, who lack empathy, and to put it bluntly, have poor people skills. Do what I do wherever possible. I try and avoid people who I don't 'gel' with as much as I can. Not always easy I know.

I find that they drain me of energy, so I want as little as possible to do with them. Be polite by all means, but keep it brief and to the point.

Hope this helps.

You know, Ayn Rand said that selflessness is really the ultimate in selfishness, because by not caring at all about yourself and constantly giving to others, you call more attention to yourself and have more adulation.

So, in fact, selfish people are actually much less interested in themselves than selfless people.

We're born selfish. The vast majority of us mature and do not seek to be the focus of attention in the way we did as mewling infants. Presumably the ones who remain selfish did not entirely grow up.

People do not owe you anything, if you stopped expecting others to treat you as something special, you might open up a little and be less selfish yourself.

I hadn't noticed that. I have been surrounded by very unselfish people today, and today has been a normal day.
