Shouldnt the people that are actually fighting this war make the call on weather they should stay or not, or do we make it for them? I say we let them choose & we as a people back their decision.

I think in the wake of all the BS we get fed on this matter ...the people who do the job should be the ones who have the say. Millitary rule is not the idea here ...just for those who do the job to have a say instead of a " March or die ". Soldiers are not your pawns, they have lives & live like you or me. I say if we can send them to fight & kill..I say we give them the power to do what they believe is right. If you have so little faith in your people, morale or your own belifes then your lost. I don't think the issue can be as cut and dried as you wish.

I don't think the military would have gone into Iraq in the first place given their own discretion. I know I wouldn't.

The Military is part of the national planning, so is the State Department, the White House and a wide range of advisers. I'm sure there is a lot of voices calling for withdrawal and a number of "Stay the course" ones too.

I'm not going to sit here and second guess what impact on national security, regional security and world peace our sudden pull out would have but it doesn't look like we can without causing a major headache for the region. That would be a bad thing.

Yes the military would like to leave. Should they have the only say? No. It isn't the way our government operates. Many countries have had problems when the Military contradicts the Executive branch and their people end up living under Military rule. Is that what your are advocating?

g-day!

Letr me see-We will let the military vote on doing whatever they want and abide by the decision they make? The military is not a democracy and could not exist as one; no one wants to go into danger and die or kill some one else.
The funny thing is I think that the people who want to pull out would come in on the short end of the stick. I spen 20 years in and one thing I noticed after I retired is that most military people (I was enlisted not an officer) military people have a very good undersanding of world events and how they could effect this nation. Most civilians I met and worked with were actually confused because I would read world events and understood them; local news they could talk but so no reason to look further. I think a great majority of the active military understands what is at stake and believe in what they are doing and know it is not a choice about if we fight but where we fight. The soldiers/military personnel talking against it are getting the press covrage but when they interbiew those two in fornt of the base what about the hundreds inside the gate who are obeying regulations and not talkin as military personnel; it is against military law to do that you know. Before you say something about freedom of speech-The miitary takes an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States but that document does not apply to them; what rights the military has are outlined in the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
Would you agree to abide by the results if you lost?

If the military were to vote on this, it would undermine the very principle of how the military continues to exist. While I appreciate your opinion, the basis of military life requires that the soldiers, marines, airmen, and sailors obey a decision made by a superior, rather than a decision made by a vote. The lower ranks do not get the same information (or as much, anyways) as the upper levels. Look at any para-military organization (police, fire service, etc, or even the medical community). Orders (decisions) must be carried out promptly. If people take the time to discuss something with everyone then vote on what to do, lives can be lost.

In our representative democracy, we let a select few vote for us in a similar manner. You do not vote on the matter, your senators and representatives do. You may believe the total opposite as what one of them votes, and yet he or she is still in a position above you.

I respectfully disagree with my brother-at-arms, the Marine CPL.

if that were how things really were done, we'd never fight a war ever.

it's not conducive to the life style of freedom we've grown accustomed to. I mean if you'd rather he saying "heil hitler" instead, that'd be ok, but if you enjoy the fact that you don't have to do that, things are the way they are and it's something you'll have to deal with. sorry.

keep in mind that every single person that has joined the military has done so voluntarily for various reasons. college, education, training...etc. but at some point they had to have realized that it's not all fun and games, they sign their life away. They are at the mercy of the president and where he says our needs are. No sane person can join the military and honestly expect to not be sent somewhere dangerous. It's a choice they made and even though i know it sucks hard core to be out there in that crap... they made the plunge.

Sure what ever but you were not a Marine. I can tell easily due to your miss spelling of the Semper Fi. I think if you'd actually join you'd have a better understanding of life in the military. I think it would be good if the soldiers were the ones to say whether they stay or leave. The many I've talked to would stay. I know a few would prefer to leave but the majority would prefer to finish what they started and I've talked to a hell of a lot of them.

Yours is a truly dumb idea. In the US we have a chain of command that goes all the way up to the President. He decides strategy. The privates follow orders. That's how the military works.
You misspelled "whether."

The military is not a democracy.

On the other hand, military members are entitled to vote (and encouraged to do so). They can vote for leaders they believe share their view on the war.

i think that when you join the military you give up most of the rights that most other people enjoy and that includes deciding where and when you are going to be somewhere the president is the commander in chief he points we go. he says jump we ask how high as we are jumping. that is just the way it works. sorry to disillusion you

no, it shouldn't be the soldiers vote. we live in a representative style government. it is ultimately up to your senator and congressperson as they are your Representatives.
