k on my computer i have:
java(TM) 6 Update 2
~and~
java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
what are these? what do they do? and do i need them?

They are two different (inconsistently named) versions of the Java Runtime Environment. Each installation of a new JRE does not uninstall the previous version(s). You don't need more than one unless you have some program which depends on an older version. You can almost certainly uninstall the older version without any ill effects. Removing both of them will likely cause some of your programs to fail.

These are the programs that let you view Java files. If you want to view websites that have Java files in there or if you use programs with Java then you need them.
