He's lost some vision and has other symptoms of aging, but was just to the vet and is healthy except for a respiratory cough. He's taking hydroco/hom 5mg for that. We have a doggie door that he's been using for 12 years, but recently he started peeing in three spots in the house. We use Nature's Miracle to destroy the stain and the smell but it's driving us crazy. We really don't have anywhere to seclude him. And, no, I will not get rid of him or euthanaze him. Any ideas?

Talk it over with your vet - Some medications can cause side effects or even a UTI

I would first take him to the vet for some blood tests to make sure he doesn't have any kidney problems or a UTI. Second, Nature's Miracle won't get the scent of the urine out enough for the dog. He can probably still smell it and thinks its okay to pee in the same place. Steam clean the carpet and use the cleaner that is specially made to take up pet accidents.

It might be a bladder or uninary tract infection - have you taken him to the vet?

Also the Nature's Miracle needs to get into the pad - make sure you are putting enough on if he is tending to go in the same spot.

You can also try additional training methods used on puppies for house training and he may just need that to get him back in the habit of going back outisde.

My best advice would be to take your baby to the vet. He could have some sort of internal infection that needs to be corrected. If not, I know there are doggie diapers, and perhaps if those are too much maintenance, you could try to re-train him. You may even want to buy those puppy training pads and put them in the spots he likes to go in the house - it's less mess and cleanup for you, and he can go there and do his business without driving you crazy.

If he doesn't have any medical issue that can be treated, and it's just due to his age (not being able to hold it), then get ready for lots of washing and cleaning. You can buy rubber mats to protect areas where he lays or sits on. You can also use those plastic type tablecloths sold at discount stores. You'll be running the washer every day but at least you'll still have him with you. I think older dogs should be taken care of just as we take care of older humans.

My dog is the same age and is doing the same thing. Honestly, there's not much you can do but seclude them. They're too old to attempt any further training or punishment. Can't you get a baby gate and put him in the kitchen? That's what I do.

Did you talk about this problem with the vet? If not, you might want to. This can be a sign of kidney and/or bladder failure.

When I was thirteen, we had this problem with our miniature schnauzer (who was fifteen). He was going a tad senile and couldn't figure out his way around the house, so at times lost control. He was the worse one ... the two other dogs that were aging also at times lost control, but not as bad as him.

I'm not sure what to tell you, but please do not punish your beagle. Trust me, they know that they're not supposed to go in the house and it does embarrass them. Punishing him might only make it worse.

He's a good old age, must be well-loved and cared for.
Dogs do have dementia just like people and loss of memory and control.
Maybe just put a thick stack of newspapers in those 3 spots that he pees at.

Bring him to the vet. It could be a UTI. Sometimes older dogs lose control of their bladder. There is medication that can help.

They do make doggie diapers if he keeps having accidents.. I would take him to the vet to make sure he hasn't developed a bladder infection, though. It may just be him getting older. :(
