This is a big deal- at least back when Mary and Joseph were alive. Getting pregnant before marriage could have condemned Mary (stoning rather than hanging).

Mary explained her situation to Joseph and he received a message from an Angel in a dream to marry her (Mary).
Joseph was a special kind of man- raising a child that wasn't his and caring for his wife.

Mary was betrothed, meaning she was engaged to be married, which according to custom at the time meant alot more than it does now. So legally it was Joseph's decision if she got stoned or not. He had 3 options. He could have her stoned by denying her publicly, he could break the engagement privately ("put her away privily") which was the equivilent of sending her with family to live out her embarassment, and which was what he considered doing. Or he could accept her as his official wife with no more ceremony, which is what he ended up doing. This was the equivalent of admitting the child was his within his society. So it was a very noble choice of his to make. It was also very noble of him to not even consider the stoning.

She didn't get lynced.

The angel appeared to Joseph & told Joseph that the baby in Mary's womb was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And also that Joseph was not suppose to know her until after she had baby Jesus.

There's also the possibility that Mary was an exceedingly large young woman who had a weakness for cherry cheese knishes and hamantashen. Given the state of women's fashion at the time it's entirely possible that her pregnacy wasn't readily apparent.

If Joseph had not accepted her she would most likely have been stoned to death... Jewish marrage was not as we know it today... they were not married when she was given the privelage of bearing Jesus... And she did not have "relations" with Joseph untill after the birth of Jesus and the time of her purification under Jewish custom... when they did finaly consumate the relationship then they were concidered "married". They then had children togeather. both son and daughters.

She was betrothed to Joseph, to be seen as guilty of out of marital intercourse he is the one who would have had to accuse her. It was legal for him to be with her during betrothal as I understand the laws at that time.
As a Angel explained what was going on to him (some what) he was OK with the situation and did not report her.

Joseph COULD have gotten her stoned, but he decided to be nice and put her away quietly. Then when the angel told him that she was telling the truth, he started covering for her.

He really deserves more credit than most people give him.

She was a married woman who had a baby. There were millions of others. Should they have all been "lynced " ?

The first time, she had an abortion in an alley.

The second time she went to planned parenthood and was told about all her options and so she left town so no one would know.

The third time, she was told about the rhythm method.

The fourth time, she heard about coitus interruptus.

Joseph left her after that.
