I have been a mom for 28 years and a child care provider in my home for 20 years. I've fed a lot of 14 month olds in my time. Snacks should be considered a "mini-meal" so focus on things you would likely serve at one of the 3 main meals of the day. It's easy to grab a handful of Cheerios or put a few Ritz crackers on the high chair, but this is not a complete meal. Cheerios are great, but add a small piece of cut-up cheese and some cut up grapes (grapes are fine for children this age provided they are cut in 1/2 and at least in 1/2 again, cut each piece in 1/2 again if the grapes are large). Leftover dinner foods are great snacks. Warm up some leftover pasta, add a little meat sauce, and some leftover green beans for a great after-nap snack. Try to add a veggie or 2 to each meal or snack. Cooked carrot pieces, grape tomatoes cut into pieces, cucumbers cut into pieces, frozen peas and corn slightly cooked in the microwave, steamed broccoli and cauliflower, and fresh or canned mushrooms have all been favorites. Just be sure to cut everything into small enough pieces. Fruit is also OK, but limit it to a couple times a day such as at breakfast and for an after dinner snack before bed. Cheese sticks cut into pieces, cooked cut up chicken, stew, meatloaf, yogurt, whole wheat toast with a light layer of peanut butter, and hummus spread on whole wheat crackers or pita bread are good protein sources. Children as young as 1 all the way up to adult-hood can get stuck in a rut where it seems as though all they'll eat is hot dogs and apple slices. Don't fret too much over this. Simply prepare healthy meals and snacks, offer the food to them and let them choose what they'll eat. Children don't starve themselves. Offer lots of choices and they'll eat when they are hungry.

They have the Gerber graduates. I always have a few on hand for a quick meal. Also I make some spaghetti and put a little sauce on it for flavor. I cut it up with a pizza cutter for the perfect size. Green beans that are soft and cut to size. You can make toast and again use the pizza cutter to cut into bite sizes. Gerber also makes "puffs" that are great for toddlers. They melt in the baby's mouth. Gerber has a whole line of healthy snacks that are just right for toddlers. (wagon wheels, vegetable crackers, lil crunchies, puffs-most of these things come in different flavors, too.)

The best thing I would do for my kids at that age was soup and crackers. They loved fresh fruits and vegtables they could pick up with their fingers and eat themselves like green beans. Try to stay away from the hotdogs and processed meats or frozen foods. They are cheap and easy but you may pay the price in the long run with food allergies and childhood obesity. Just be creative and have fun it is their time to explore what they can do on their own and make sure they can feed themselves whatever you give them.
