The main differences are live and recording engineers. Live engineers will go to gigs and set up the levels according to the size of the venue, surroundings, band etc. So this side of things is very hands on and you need to be flexible and expect anything.
Then theres recording engineers which work in the recording studio setting up levels, eq, setting up microphones and stuff.
To be a recording engineer, a good one, requires alot more experience and accuracy than the live engineer but most studio engineers will have done live work to work their way up to the studio.
In the studio you could be a mixing engineer, working on the mixing consoles making sure the levels are correct (not too high or low) adding/reducing eq, etc. Then you will have master engineers who will listen to the recorded track and using state of the art gear will finalise everything and tidy it up, ready for disc.
Theres a hundred different types of engineer but they are the basics. Best of luck, us engineers control everything!
