Work on your abs. Seriously! Your abs support your back, your legs, your arms, heck -- your entire body. If you have strong abs you have a much lower chance of back injury.

For lifting you need to be working more than just your back although that is a critical part.

Good exercises for lifting are Squats, Dead Lifts, Rows, Pull-ups, some kind of butt lift exercise, dumbbell swings, crunches, leg lifts and russian twists.

Make sure you focus on your lower back, abs and butt as those are the areas that will support and stabilize everything else. A good thing about your job is that your job itself will give you strength in exactly the right places for lifting

Good luck.
