You dont have to have anything you dont want to have.

We had planned on not having ushers but at the last minute asked one friend to be an usher, simply to help with chairs etc.

Its youre wedding and its all up to you!!

In many of the weddings that I have been to over the past two years, the groomsmen double as ushers, or there are no ushers at all. If you have people that you feel would be good ushers (and would be willing to do it) then I recommend it. In a way, it encourages people to sit next to other people, rather than in clumps that are scattered all over the place. If you are thinking of doing it for the sake of doing, don't worry about it. It could be one less thing to take care of during Wedding Week! Congratulations!

Yes! I think now a days they call them groomsmen. These fellows should be friends/relatives of the groom/bride. When people are ready to enter the sanctuary, the usher asks which side of the family & seats the guest accordingly. Of course the immediate families of bride/groom are to be seated last. The ushers then take their places up front just prior to the bridesmaids coming down the aisle. The best man does not do this. He helps the groom get ready, maqkes sure he has the ring etc. there should be as many groomsmen/ushers as there are bridesmaids because they escort bridesmaids away from the altar. They also stand in the reception line on the grooms side.

People often confuse Ushers and Groomsmen. If you are having Groomsmen they can perform the role of an usher by seating the guests at the church. You do not have to have separate Ushers if you have Groomsmen. If your wedding party is small however you may need a few Ushers to seat guests, but they would not necessarily wear a tux just a nice suit.

You definitely need someone to seat guests if you are inviting a large number of guests (25+).

The only reason to have ushers is if you have more than 25 people at your wedding and you need to seat them. Ushers duties are to show people where to sit. If you want your wedding to go off on time and dont want to have people trying to come into the ceremony late, then have ushers.

The ushers usually perfrom the job of seating the guests, and making sure that people you want in certain places are put there. If that's something you aren't worried about I guess you could just not have them.

You don't have to. You really only need them if you are doing the "brides side" "grooms side" thing.

With our wedding we are just letting people sit wherever and I made some cute markers to designate the reserved area for the parents and grandparents.

No you don't. We had 75 guests at the ceremony and 150 at the reception. They were free to sit wherever and with whomever they wanted.

I would say if you are having more than 50 to a ceremony, it would be wise.
